almotamar.net - SANAA-Yemeni Journalists Syndicate (YJS) announced Thursday its full solidarity with journalist Ali Al-Shatir editor in chief of 26 September Newspaper and its standing by him versus threat of murder by MP sheikh Hamid al-Ahmar, calling in a press release, almotamar.net received copy, on competent authorities in the state and government, particularly the ministry of interior an the general prosecution to shoulder their responsibility for the protection of Mr. Al-Shatir. The call also demanded for providing protection for the Yemeni press and journalists in general.
The YJS statement issued by the YJS council in its plenary meeting Wednesday also urged for solidarity with journalist Ali Al-Shatir, affirming that judiciary is the place where any aggrieved of what is published in the press should complain. The press release added that procedure has to be alternative to ways of threat, violation and aggression, the acts of which are condemned by anyone entertaining a live conscience and are in contradiction with the civilization project in Yemen that is based on prevalence of the concepts of order and law and the values of freedom and democracy. The YJS statement also called the newspapers to deal with sense of responsibility with the available large freedom of publication and opinion in Yemen in a manner4 avoiding attack on personal freedoms and dignity of persons.
The YJS appealed in its press release to President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who it described as advocate and protector of press freedom and journalists, to give his directions to the state institutions to protect the journalists against violations and threats.
