almotamar.net - HUDDEIDAH (Yemen)- President Ali Abdullah Saleh announced Thursday the Supreme commission for Elections and Referendum (SCER) will be begin putting into force the present law on holding elections of secretaries general of local councils of all governorates and districts until the law of local authority is amended. The amendment is to stipulate the election of governors and heads of districts and that such a move will need some weeks or months, adding “ By the will of God election of governors and heads of districts will be in one or two months time “
The president’s announcement was made Thursday during an iftar (fast-breaking) meal the president has given in the governorate of Huddeidah on the occasion of the fasting month of Ramadan and festivities of the 44th Day of the Yemeni revolution of 26 September, and the 43rd of 14 October revolution.
President Saleh said in this regard during the past years the local councils have achieved big successes, “and I remember in this respect that the local councils in the governorate of Huddeidah accomplished projects of a cost amounting to YR 250 billion and 409 million during the past years and this reflects the great successes done by the local councils.”
“I am glad to talk to you at the time of the final days of Ramadan and the Eid Al-Fitr as well as the success of presidential and local elections and I would like to congratulate the population of Huddeidah and Rima governorates for the great successes realized in the presidential and local councils elections.” He added that the masses of the people giving their votes for General People’s Congress (GPC)’s candidates strongly indicate that performance of the GPC was distinguished. The president added,” There is no fear about anything. As we have elected directly the parliament, the president of the republic and the local councils there will be the election of heads of the local authority and there is no problem. Don’t believe those skeptical and nerveless ones, their voices should not be listened to because there is no voice louder than that of the people and the homeland is bigger than anything.” The president called on all the people of Yemen with all their political trends to head for construction, industry and agriculture after the success of the presidential and local elections.
Meanwhile the president said we will open a new chapter with all political activities because we are higher than to stick to nonsense and tense address or small speeches or incorrect writings. The homeland is bigger than all of us and we have to get directed to building, development, agriculture, to fighting poverty and extend a hand to the poor, to provide job opportunities via the state and through businessmen and local, Arab and foreign investors.
President Saleh also reiterated his welcome of investments saying investments and investors from various sisterly and friendly countries are welcomed.
The reception and iftar party was attended by the governors of Huddeidah and Rima, senior officials and figures from the two governorates, members of parliament and leaders of political parties and civil society organizations as well as a host of attendees.
