Almotamar.net- - Abdulla Al Daboos, Director General of Emirates Post, signed memorandums of understanding (MoU) with Mohammed Ali Morgham, Director General of Post Authority of Yemen, and Alaa Fahmi, Chairman of Egyptian National Post Authority.

Under the agreement with Yemen, Emirates Post and Yemen will work together to enhance postal services between the two countries, and start a money transfer service, as well as put together a marketing and promotions plan. In addition, Emirates Post will offer Yemen expertise of its indigenously developed Point of Sale (POS) system for linking post offices through a centralised computerised system.

The agreement also covers use of each other's mail hub facility, with Yemen using Dubai as a re-routing point and Dubai using Yemen's hub to reach African countries. A committee made up of representatives from both sides was formed to follow up on the terms listed in the Memorandum of Understanding.

The MoU with the Egyptian National Post Authority also envisages increased cooperation in post-related fields, with a focus on the new International Financial System (IFS) application. Egyptian Post is to start a two-month trial phase of the project, and a full-fledged agreement is expected to be in place within two months.

Abdulla Al Daboos, Director General, Emirates Post said: 'The agreements with Yemen and Egypt will take Emirates Post closer to our goal of increasing cooperation with neighbourly countries in the region. We are ready to offer our expertise, and willing to learn from other countries. Once the agreements are implemented, people from both countries will benefit from the innovative, value-added and fast-track services.'

The International Financial System application (IFS) is a software application that was developed by the Postal Technology Centre to address problems often encountered with traditional money order services. IFS uses electronic data interchange (EDI) to send money order data electronically, using sophisticated data encryption techniques to ensure the integrity of the data.

The Universal Postal Union (UPU) Strategy Conference came to a successful close today with more than 1,000 postal decision makers and experts from over 130 countries coming together to chart a new strategy for global postal services. Among the illustrious audience attending the opening were over 40 ministers from UPU member countries and a large number of high profile delegations from postal corporations.

Al Daboos said, 'The successful completion of the UPU Strategy Conference consolidates our position as a leading postal innovator. We are driven by a commitment to follow the highest standards of excellence and make a mark for ourselves as one of the most innovative, dynamic and diversified postal operators.'

It was the first time the UPU conference was held outside Switzerland, where the organization is headquartered.
