Arif Abu Hatim almotamar.net - SANAA- The attorney General in Yemen has made it clear that the number of insolvent prisoners who were released was 71 and those were indebted of financial commitments for which they were imprisoned.
In his statement to almotamar.net Dr Abdullah al- Ulfi said the released prisoners were condemned for small cases and were in need of small and easy sums. Some them have completed serving the term of their punishment and the amounts of money the government paid for their release from the public treasury amounted to YR 37 million, not YR 73 million as the media reported.
Dr al-Ulfi expressed his astonishment about the figures reported by local media claiming that the released prisoners were 85 out of 1406, wondering from where did those reporters have have those figures.
He added if they wanted us to release prisoners condemned for serious big cases “we tell them the state does not set free and does not help the thief and the fraudulent and those charged by issues of fraudulence in cars, gold and checks without assets because some of those need hundreds of millions in order to set them free and at the same time this method would encourage people to practice the crime.”
