Yesterday, police in Virginia identified the gunman responsible for the brutal killings as Cho Seung-hui - a student of the university - a migrant from South Korea who went to live in the United States in 1992.
Police and university officials offered no clues to 23-year-old Seung-hui's motive in the massacre, the deadliest shooting rampage in modern US history. However, there was a report yesterday that Cho, who was studying English Literature, had been referred to the school's counselling service.
Other news reports said he may have been taking medication for depression, that he was becoming increasingly violent and erratic and that he left a note in his dormitory in which he railed against "rich kids", "debauchery" and "deceitful charlatans" on campus.
"He was a loner, and we're having difficulty finding information about him," school spokesman Larry Hincker said.
Yesterday afternoon, thousands of people gathered in the Virginia Tech basketball arena, and when it filled up, thousands more filed into the football stadium, for a memorial service for the victims.
"As you draw closer to your families in the coming days, I ask you to reach out to those who ache for sons and daughters who are never coming home," President George W Bush said at the memorial.
Virginia Tech President Charles Steger received a 30-second standing ovation, despite bitter complaints from parents and
