Almotamar.net - President Ali Abdullah Saleh affirmed Sunday the importance of the role the European Union should undertake for the establishment of peace in the region by adopting the Arab peace initiative and obliging Israel to accept it for the establishment of just mad comprehensive peace in the area.

In his meeting in Sana'a today the visiting EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner president Saleh made it clear the establishment of peace in the region would guarantee ending the conflicts and the state of tension and instability in the region and enhance the efforts for combating terror.

The president called the European Union also to play effective role for the realization of reconciliation between all political forces and social and religious spectra in Iraq in the manner leading to building democratic, free and independent Iraq in addition to the EU's support for efforts of preface and reconciliation in Somalia.


On her part Ms Benita Ferrero-Waldner confirmed the EU support for development and democracy in Yemen and willingness to offer support to the Supreme Commission of Elections and Referendum in order to develop the electoral process.

Walner also evaluated the efforts exerted by Yemen for reconciliation and peace in Somalia in addition to providing care for refugees from Somalia and the Horn of Africa region. She praised Yemen's achievement in areas of democracy and reforms and indicated the success of the presidential and local elections, pointing out that democracy in Yemen represents pioneering experiment in the region.

The meeting discussed relations and areas of cooperation between Yemen and the European Union and the aid offered by the EU to march of democracy and development in Yemen as well as to development of electoral system in the country. The meeting discussed regional and international situations of common interest particularly the Arab peace initiative and developments of situations in Iraq and Somalia.
