Abdulmalik al-Fohidy Almotamar.net - Statements and stands of the parties of the Joint Meeting (JMP) and their leaderships towards the military and security establishment arouse fears of the political vision those parties bear for this national establishment.

Fears increase alongside with escalation of hostile campaign the JMP launch against this establishment, a campaign which began even before the presidential and local elections held in Yemen last year and has been highly escalated in the recent months.

The JMP hostile stances towards the military and security establishment reached an extent that it leaderships decline from attending military and security activities as happened last week when they did not attend a graduation ceremony batches from the military academy. They have taken that stance despite the fact that the law prohibits party action inside the military and security establishment as well as statements and stands of the political leadership that repeatedly affirm that the military and security establishment is the homeland party.

Confirmations of the president of the republic do not stop at considering the military and security establishment is that of the homeland and the people the official the statements. Those confirmations were repeated inside meetings of the General People's Congress (GPC) meetings. In the second session of the GPC main permanent committee held on 25-26 last August and in response to a remark submitted by some members of the committee on non-cooperation of military and security commands with the GPC organisations' leaderships, the president replied " the army and the security are the homeland's establishments and not partisan affiliate of the GPC. Moreover, President Ali Abdullah Saleh who was priding over the meeting refused after that to open discussion on that subject.

Against that clear contradiction appears between stances and statements of opposition parties leaderships towards the army and the security and attempts of biddings that were repeated in every electoral process.

Although the leaderships of the JMP tried to show their stand by the army and the security and repeated demands for raising their salaries by 100%, those demands were in fact part of electoral biddings. Statements and stands of the JMP affirm completely contrary of that with their repeated hostile statements and stands concerning the army and the security to an extent they visualized army and security members as enemies of those parties.

In a symposium of Political Development Forum last April leaderships of the JMP attacked the military and security establishment considering it as an establishment used for consolidation of authority of despotism.

The Islah party leader Mohammed Qahtan mentioned that this national establishment that offered the best of its sons in defence of the Yemeni people right to freedom and democracy and independence should distance itself to change into a tool in the hand of a despotic using it for achieving his personal whims and desires. Similarly, the Socialist leading member Ali al-Sarari attacked the army and the security at the same symposium claiming that the military forces were used for attacking contestants of the ruling party and to control the public property in favour of a certain person or certain party and to change the media into "a parrot" in favor of the ruler and misleading the society.

Member of the Islah Shoura the lawyer Mohammed Naji Allaw has also assailed the military and security establishment, accusing its members of seizing plots of land. In his interruption he mentioned that military coup is not expected and assured the Yemeni authority giving a reason that the military are busy plundering lands.

On their part the JMP media launched last week a provocative hostile campaign against the military and security forces launched on the sites of Islah and the YSP with many accusations of the army and security forces of practicing suppression and violation of human rights of those participating in demonstrations.

The reasons of the enmity of the Islah and the YSP towards the army and the security can be explained through remembering the historical past of those parties grouping inside the JMP especially the Yemeni Congregation for Reform (Islah) and the Socialist Party.

The Islah, a branch of the Muslim Brotherhood in Yemen, does not differ in its foundation and ideology from the rest of Islamic parties in the Arab and Islamic world which derived the concepts of jihad and building militias as ways in their endeavours to take power. And the Islah party is no different from the rest of Islamic parties. It possesses armed militias trained on resort to armed violence and the participation of the Islah militias in the secessionist war is considered an evidence of the approach followed by the Islah in its political pursuit. Most of its higher leaderships, if not all, have military and security history.

The Islah stand of refusing the decision of banning weapons perhaps reflexes the truth that it is not different from the rest of the Islamic movement that considers the armed militias as a means for its seizure of power in case it attained it,

The Yemeni Socialist Party is no different in its dependence on armed militias for taking power and rather the socialist parties in the world, including the YSP, depended on incorporating the army and the security into the party structure to an extent that the party, the army and the state formed one structure which is the party structure that depends on the armed force in controlling and running the country.

All here remember the tragedies the southern part of the country had seen before the unity as a result of armed conflicts that governed the work of the YSP. The vents of 13 January 1986 still represent the strongest evidence of the ideology that the YSP adopted in settling the disputes inside the party organisations.


On the other hand the Yemeni official newspaper Al-Thawra last Tuesday assailed in its editorial the wrong partisan mobilization against the armed forces and the security as well as boycotting by the JMP leaderships of any activities concerning the military and security establishment the latest of which was the ceremony held last Monday for the graduation of a number new military batches.

The editorial said it was not the first time such narrow-minded persons disappear on such occasions despite their full knowledge that the military and security establishment is that of the people and the homeland and its loyalty is to Yemen and it is not a party establishment.

The newspaper added that what arouses astonishment and surprise is that those party leaderships harbour enmity to the armed forces and security while this national establishment has being providing them and preparing for them climates of political emergence and to practice political and party action openly amid secure and stable atmospheres throughout the past years.
