Almotamar.net - Yemen has Wednesday welcomed the agreement the Lebanese political groups have reached today in Doha, affirming that the agreement has confirmed their sense of responsibility and keenness on Lebanon's unity and avoiding it sectarian conflicts.
Yemen's foreign minister Dr Abu Bakr al-Qirbi told almotamar.net, "We congratulate the Lebanese brethren on this agreement that demonstrated their responsibility towards the Lebanese people and their keenness on Lebanon's unity and keeping it away from sectarian conflicts."
Minister al-Qirbi expressed also appreciation for the active role played by the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Khalifa Bin Hamad Al Thani and his Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim, the Arab League Secretary General Amr Mousa and the Arab Committee for containing the Lebanese crisis.
Al-Qirbi also affirmed that the success of the Lebanese dialogue confirms the role that the Arab League can play in solving disputes at the regional and Arab levels.
The agreement called for moves within twenty-four hours for the Parliament in Beirut to begin the process of electing General Michel Suleiman, the commander of Lebanon's army, as president.
Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabr al-Thani, the Qatari Prime Minister, told a formal ceremony in Doha that Lebanon’s feuding parties “agreed that the speaker of Parliament will call within 24 hours for the election of Gen. Michel Suleiman as president of the republic.”

The agreement negotiated in Doha foresaw the creation of a government composed of 16 cabinet seats for the ruling majority, 11 for the opposition and three to be nominated by the new president. The agreement includes a pledge by all parties of not to tender resignation or hindering the work of the government. The Qatari Prime Minister also mentioned about the new electoral law that will restore work according to the judiciary law that was applied in 1960 with some amendments regarding Beirut and some areas.
The deal enjoined all parties to “commit themselves not to use weapons or violence in order to achieve political gains under any circumstances.”
The emergency meeting of the Arab Foreign Ministers held in Cairo on 11 May 2008 had formed a committee chaired by the Qatari Prime Minister and membership of arab countries, including Yemen, to travel to Beirut for support and preparation for dialogue among the Lebanese parties leading to election of the president of Lebanon and formation of a national unity government.
