By: almotamar.net - Ahmed Al-Majeedi, an independent presidential candidate, member of the Yemen Socialist Party (YSP)’s Central Committee, rejected the decision that freezes his party membership, a step before sacking him for allegedly confusing the YSP’s stance.
He described the decision as “hasty and serves neither the party nor the causes for which it struggled.”
In a statement to almotamar.net, Al-Majeedi said, “The freezing decision was timed to come out one day before commencing the election publicity in a bid by the party leadership to prevent me from practicing my constitutional and legal right as an independent presidential election candidate.”
He confirmed that he would stay the course and that the freezing decision would not affect him. Al-Majeedi’s publicity program is due to start today in Al-Ghaidhah, the metropolis of Al-Mahrah governorate, in which he currently stays, while his second function is to take place in Aden according to his program approved by the Supreme Commission for Elections and Referendum.
Al-Majeedi, however, expressed his clinging to his party and his taking pride in being affiliated with it and bragging about its previous achievements.
“The reckless stream in the party cannot make me give up my affiliation and my willing practice of one of my rights which I chose voluntarily and without any external influence,” Al-Majeedi added.
He further explained, “I have not been informed of the freezing decision. All YSP debate regarding my candidacy has ended up in split stance. The party’s wing that follows Islah has no experience and adopts old-fashioned practices which show that the YSP has gone back to the democratic centralization phase which does not suit the current Yemen’s democratic atmosphere.”
He accused his party’s general secretariat of being naďve and lacking leadership qualities which could have enabled it to lead an outstanding party like the YSP that survived collapse despite shortcomings caused by some of its members.
“The YSP leadership has proved to be a failure in terms of rectifying the miserable conditions of the party. It has not learned lessons from the past experiences which led to a series of bloody conflicts victimizing the noblest and greatest struggler of our party’s leaders.”
He called on the party’s senior leadership to adapt to the changes in the political arena on the public, partisan, national and international levels. Al-Majeedi pointed out the Islah Party’s stance on the candidacy of its member Fathi Al-Azab who runs as an independent candidate. “Islah did not take a decision to freeze or sack Al-Azab,” he said.
Al-Majeedi added, “Congratulations go to Islah for having succeeded in dragging the YSP and the rest of the Joint Meeting parties. Such a subservience shows the political sophistication of Islah which does not think Al-Azab’s candidacy will confuse its stance.”
Concerning Dr. Ameen Ahmed Thabet, who faced the same fate inflicted on him by the YSP General Secretariat and Political Bureau, Al-Majeedi commented, “Dr. Thabet did not commit a crime except that he filed his candidacy and then withdrew.” Al-Majeedi expressed his sorrow over such decisions with which some people aim to disintegrate the party.
A YSP official source had said that the party’s General Secretariat and Political Bureau had made a decision to freeze the membership of Ahmed Abdullah Al-Majeedi and Dr. Ameen Ahmed Thabet for flouting the party’s decision to support the Joint Meeting Parties’ candidate Faisal bin Shamlan.
The source confirmed that Al-Majeedi did not flout the party’s decision but did confuse the party’s stance and is behaving in the interest of other entities. In a statement to nasspress website Tuesday, the source said Al-Majeedi’s case would be discussed at the General Secretariat’s coming meeting to decide to terminate his YSP membership.
