Almotamar.net - Vice President of the Yemen Republic, the Secretary General of the General People’s Congress GPC, the ruling party in Yemen Abid Rabou Mansour Hadi has affirmed Sunday that the accord reached by the political parties in Yemen on the extension to term of the present parliament for two years came out of the political leadership, led by president Ali Abdullah Saleh, giving precedence to the higher interest of the homeland to any other consideration. It has been out of the position of national responsibility the GPC is shouldering for the security and stability and non-shaking of the public peace.
The GPC Secretary General also made it clear the agreement essentially serves the democratic pursuit and protects it against mistakes and hindrances, taking into account that democracy in Yemen is still in the phase of growth and needs strong support from particularly the European Union EU, the American Democratic Institute and all foundations concerned with democracy and caring for it.
Mr Hadi remarks came during his meeting on Sunday with a number of EU ambassadors to Yemen. The ambassadors attending the meeting were those of Czech Republic, Italy, Spain, France, United Kingdom, Germany, Holland, and Charge d’Affaires of each of Bulgaria, and the European Commission to Yemen.
Mr Hadi has earlier welcomed the ambassadors of the EU and reviewed a number of topics and issues that are of interest and stabilize the democratic process and political pluralism in Yemen, especially since the 22 of May, the date of the unification and the establishment of the Yemeni Republic and its association of the political system with the democratic approach.
He pointed out what happened of dissatisfaction, friction and wrangles due to non-conceding to of the democratic results and that led to problems between the believers in the democratic policy and the disbelievers it and that exploded the events of the year 1994.
The Vice President however pointed out that the wheel of democracy continued moving and parliamentary, presidential and local elections occurred. He has also highlighted the successes realized on the road of the democratic march.
Mr Hadi pointed out that what has recently happened of political bickering, and maybe differences in points of view during the past two years, along with presence of representatives of the European Union and the American democratic Institute, led in the end to an agreement of postponement, though the legal and organizational procedures were heading towards holding the elections in their due time.
The GPC Secretary General also put the EU ambassadors in the picture concerning details and points agreed on between the GPC and the Joint Meeting Parties JMP of which the agreement on extension of the parliament term pursuant to the JMP request and insistence.
For his part the Assistant Secretary General of the GPC for Political and External Relations Affairs Sultan al-Barakani has made it clear that the agreement of the parties on the parliament term extension came following many dialogues that led to this agreement that gave priority to the national interest. Al-Barakani also pointed out that Yemen works with its international partners especially in the EU for pushing forward the march of democracy, confirming that the GPC evaluates and praises efforts of the European friends and their support for strengthening democracy in Yemen.
He added that the GPC is keen on continuation and enhancement of this cooperation through the upcoming stage in a better and larger form. He said, “We shall work together with our EU friends on the issues related to democracy and reforms in the next period.”
The EU ambassadors on their part have affirmed their understanding of the decision of the two-year extension of the parliament term and postponement of the elections. They also affirmed their countries continuation in supporting the approach of democracy and success of its course as well as the support for all economic and political aspects of it.
The ambassadors expressed their understanding of the recent accord among the Yemeni political parties concerning the parliament extension for carrying out the multi-aspect reforms agreed on.
The ambassadors also dealt with issues of cooperation especially continuation of periodic meetings for following up consultations and assessment of performance in the required tracks during the next two years so that to help for reaching at the upcoming elections in a safe and natural form with regard to different aspects and required procedures.
The EU ambassadors affirmed readiness of their countries and the EU to offer various forms of support to Yemen in all areas, whether those related to elections and enhancement of democracy or those related to different reforms in economic and development areas.
