Almotama.net - SANAA- the Supreme Commission for Election and Referendum (SCER) said it has decided to deprive 248 thousand and 664 electors of voting in the presidential elections and local councils scheduled on 20 September 2006 due to their violation of lections law.
Member of the SCER, the chairman of Technical Affairs and Planning of the SCER Dr Mohammed al-Sayyani said in a press conference today at the Information Center of the elections of the president and local councils the deprivation came as a result of legal measures taken by courts and general prosecutions for violation of the elections law. Thus the number of those eligible for voting on 20 September, as recorded in elector records, 9 million, 247 thousand and 390 electors.
Al-Sayyani affirmed that the number of those registered in elector records of both sexes amounted to 5 million, 446 thousand and 28, and registered females amounted to 3 million, 9thousand and 577. he added that the number of candidates nominated themselves to local councils in he governorates amounted 240, including 376 candidates representing the General People’s Congress (GPC), 235 from the Yemeni Congregation for Reform (Islah), 85 from the YSP, 13 from the Nasserite, 26 from the Ba’th party, 20 from the National Ba’th party, 14 from the National Nasserite in addition to 4408 independent candidates. Dr al-Sayyani said the SCER received 361 requests of candidates to the governorates local councils asking for withdrawal: 4 from the GPC, 7 from Islah, 6 from the YSP, and 342 independents and the remainder from other parties. The number of candidates for districts local councils amounted to 23 thousand, and 110, including 6330 from the GPC, 3800 from Islah, 930 from the YSP, 212 from the Nasserite and ten thousand and five independent candidates. He pointed out that the independent candidates came in the first place of those withdrawing from nomination for the local councils in the districts.
