The Elections Monitoring Team (EMT) in cooperation with the Yemen Times newspaper held Tuesday a seminar on free and fair elections. The seminar aimed to provide an opportunity for interested media activists, political parties, and international and local monitors to obtain and provide information on the course of the coming presidential and local council elections.
The EMT affirmed it will monitor the September elections throughout Yemen in a neutral way, having a team with sufficient experience in monitoring elections
Dr. Mohammed al-Qadasi, senior EMT team member, said EMT's most important aim is to spread democratic culture and human rights among people, and spread democracy awareness among young people and improve their leadership skills, provide environment appropriate for building a constitutional state and fixing peaceful transfer of power, and enhance women's participation in elections.
Ms. Nadia al-Saqqaf, editor-in-chief of the Yemen Times newspaper, said caring for the election phases by non-governmental organizations is important as the election's results will have impact on all and so "elections should be fair and free."
The EMT is a non-governmental organization working to establish a democratic culture by promoting democracy and good governance in Yemen. It includes a constellation of Yemeni professors with different specializations and political affiliations.
