By: Mohammed al-Haidari - SANA'A- The Supreme Commission for Elections and Referendum (SCER) has issued licenses to 108 international observers representing 9 organizations to monitor the September presidential and local council elections, said Mohammed Dahhan, head of Foreign Affairs Sector at the SCER, during a press conference held Tuesday in Sana'a.
Dahhan stated there are 88 licenses to be issued soon, while 119 others still under study, adding that the period of receiving the application finished on Monday according to the law. The SCER has decided, however, to study any application it would receive in the few days to come, he noted.
"There are 88 media observers who deal directly with the SCER's information center, representing Yemeni, Arabic and international media.
Observers include representatives of the European Union, Senate-Shoura and similar chambers in Africa and the Arab World, UNDP's supporting elections project, Arab Organization for International Cooperation, American Center for International Labor Solidarity, IFES, American Embassy in Sana'a, American Democratic Institute, and Chiller Institute.
For his part, Abdu al-Janadi, SCER's information officer, said the SCER's information center will have a meeting with secretaries- general of political parties to discuss about holding peaceful elections and issuing a statement in this regard.
Vice-Chairman of the SCER, Abdullah al-Aqwa', made it clear that the SCER would inform parties about violations they make during the election campaigns, urging them to stick to the election publicity law.
