Coinciding with the National Day of Children and Youth, Save the Children International Organization (SCI) concluded a training course for children’s rights, protection and advocacy for a sum of fifty different Yemeni media members on Thursday, February 20th.
The training course continued for two days aiming to supply media workers in various local audio-visual and print media from seven governorates: Sana’a, Aden, Hodeida, Taiz, Dhamar, Lahj and Amran in skills and knowledge about children’s rights and protection and the role of the media in spreading awareness in relation to children protection and linked it to the legal framework of Yemen and the international community.
At the opening, Dr. Hassan Ali Taher, Hodeida province undersecretary, stated that in the next stage the local authority in Hodeida will make a strategic plan in all its development aspects and societal issues, including the issues of childhood and how to protect them from all the violations that can be exposed to them.
“The child is the future of society and each individual should consider the violated child as his own child to give him/her all the rights to stand up and seriously stop the practice of violations,” he added.
For her part, Fatima al-ajel, the Policy and Advocacy Manager at SCI, confirmed the importance of working on children’s issues neutrally without politicization or partisan, ” the child in before the age of eighteen is supposed to be neutral and far away from any party and therefore everyone must work at the service of this important segment of society.”
This course is part of the training program carried out by the SCI to train and qualify media members in advocating children’s issues through networks in Yemen with the areas of protection. The course concluded with a play acted out by children and reflecting many of the children’s issues such as, malnutrition. The play was presented in front of 10,000 children for awareness.
