Almotamar.net Google - Beirut - The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah lit the skies over the capital Beirut Wednesday night with fireworks to 'celebrate' the resignation of Israel's military chief Dan Halutz.
The fireworks were set off from downtown Beirut where the Hezbollah-led opposition have been staging since December 1 an open- ended sit-in to overthrow the Western-backed government of Prime Minister Fouad Seniora.
Hezbollah followers distributed sweets, saying, 'We are celebrating our second victory over Israel.'
'The first victory was when our strugglers lasted 33 days, confronting the largest army in the Middle East. The second was the resignation of Halutz over his defeat in Lebanon,' Hezbollah organizer Ghassan Darwish told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa at the scene.
'God bless the resistance,' the crowd chanted.
Veiled women clad in black chadour were seen waving yellow Hezbollah flags and young Shiite followers of the movement were dancing in circles to celebrate.
Along with Hezbollah were their Christian allies, followers of hardline General Michel Aoun.
'All the Lebanese should celebrate the resignation of Halutz because it is our Lebanese strugglers who defeated his army and pushed him towards his resignation,' a follower of Aoun carrying a Hezbollah flag said.
Halutz was criticized after the Lebanon-Israel war ended in a UN-sponsored ceasefire on August 14 for overestimating the effectiveness of airstrikes during the 33-day war, while infantry and armoured units were poorly trained and equipped.
