Almotamar.net EURONEWS - Israeli and Lebanese troops have exchanged fire on the border between the two countries, in an incident described as "serious" by a United Nations force in the area. The Israeli Defence Force says its troops were searching for mines on its own side of the frontier when they came under fire. The Lebanese army claims an Israeli vehicle crossed into Lebanon. There was a brief exchange of fire but neither side has reported any casualties.

It is the first such incident since Lebanon deployed troops to its southern border after last summers' 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah militia. The area has since been monitored by Lebanese government forces and UN peacekeepers. Israeli sources say they are looking for more mines after the discovery of four devices earlier this week. Claims they were recently planted have been denied by Hezbollah. Israel now says it will increase its aerial presence over the border.
