almotamar.net - Meetings of the 6th general conference on political and economic reforms in the Arab homeland began in the Chinese city of Guanzo. Participating in the conference are experts from more than 20 countries and it discusses democracy process in Yemen for the period 1990-2007.
Art the opening of the conference, organized by the Arab Centre for Strategic Studies based in China on 14-17 April, the coordinator of the conference Dr Sayed Hassan delivered an introduction giving information on Yemen in which he reviewed the main historical changes in the age of democracy in Yemen.
The working paper presented by Yemen to the conference was about the democratic march of Yemen since the advent of unity in 1990 until the presidential and local elections in 2006.it has contained detailed review of six electoral experiments held in Yemen since April 1993 parliamentary elections on basis of political pluralism through the parliamentary elections in 1997 then the presidential elections in 1999, the first local elections in 200, the elections of 2003 and the latest elections in September 2006. On president Ali Abdullah Saleh's belief in democracy the paper affirmed he applies it as an approach in his general behaviour. The paper also confirmed that Yemen is making strong steps in the stabilization of the democratic pursuit. The paper presented by the Yemeni media man Mohammed al-Khamiri it mentioned that in dependence on indicators and figures and proportions of political participation in all elections and the results they produced one would learn that Yemen is taking big steps in the consolidation of the democratic pursuit.
On the presidential and local elections of 2006 the paper mentioned it was the most heated in the history of Yemeni elections after the opposition parties have expressed fully their choices and that represented a qualitative transfer in this regard.
