Almotamar.net - Head of the General People's Congress (GPC)'s information office Tariq al-Shamy considered Thursday that marking the World Press Freedom Day on the 3rd of May as coming at a time the press movement in Yemen has witnessed great development linked to the process of democracy and pluralism development Yemen has pursued since the reunification of the country.
Mr. Tariq al-Shamy hailed on this occasion all employees in press and media in Yemen calling them to upgrade the press performance and to keep away from using the media message in political wrangles and to associate the media message with issues and concerns of the homeland.
In a statement to almotamar.net Mr. Tariq al-Shamy called on the government to approve the press and publications law in accordance with President Ali Abdullah Saleh's initiative with regard to canceling the punishment of journalists because of performing their opinion.
Al-Shamy also requested development of the press performance in various government, partisan and independent press establishments and also to transfer situations of press to a forward stage so that there would be press establishment guaranteeing the journalists rights and ensure for them dignified life and to help them perform their tasks in professionalism and independence.
In conclusion of his statement al-Shamy called on the workers in press profession to bear their responsibilities in the protection of the national unity and social peace and to raise the level of general awareness and enhancement of transparency.
