almotamar-net - Tens of thousands of women took to the streets in Sanaa yesterday to protest against cartoons of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) published in Denmark and Norway.
Protesters, mostly school and university students, gathered at the main parade square in Sanaa and marched to headquarters of the European Commission and the United Nations in the Siteen suburb. A statement calling for apology from the Danish newspaper which originally showed the cartoons was handed over to officials at the two organisations.
Published last September 30 in the paper and reprinted by a Norwegian paper last month, the 12 drawings included one showing the holy Prophet wearing a turban shaped as a bomb with a lit fuse.
Angry female students burned Danish flags and shouted Oh Muslim traders, Boycott Danes, Boycott the enemies of religion.
They held placards reading An insult to our holy Prophet is an insult to us, and We reject insults to our prophet under any pretext.
Other banners called to boycotting Danish goods.
Police estimated the number of protesters at 80,000,
The blasphemous drawings sparked widespread protests and boycotts of Danish products in Yemen and the Muslim world.
