almotamar.net - The parliamentary-media forum has Monday recommended effecting amendments on the press law so that to guarantee expansion of freedoms of the press in Yemen.

That came during a workshop organised Monday by Human Right Information and Training Centre where the minister of human rights Hudda al-Ban asserted the importance of amending the press law for securing a modern law in line with international conventions related to the pres and to license launching private sector broadcasting and TV stations.

The minister also called on the media to undertake a role creating a climate of tolerance enhancing democracy and avoiding skepticism in the parliament and patriotism of its members as well as supporting trust in civil organisations. The minister touched on the strategic relationship between the media and the rights movements indicating the journalist need of being aware of the rights aspect.

On his part the chairman of Yemeni journalists Nassr Taha Mustafa urged the speeding up of effecting amendments to the press and publications law and abolishing the imprisonment punishment against journalists in implementation of the president of the republic's directives and wondered about the reason for the delay in making the amendments despite the elapse of three years and a half since the issuance of those directives.

He pointed out that the president's election programme included permission of launching special satellite TV channels and wondered why there is no legislation in this regard yet.

The workshop that was opened by the founder of the Hritc Izzidin al-Asbahi was attended by members of parliament, media men and jurists stressed on what can be done with the presence of a media and parliament alliance in serving the freedom of opinion and expression.
