By: Mohammed Taher - SANA'A- President Ali Abdullah Saleh indicated today he would fully support women candidates for local councils to enable them win in the September elections. This came as he met a peaceful march for women at the Presidential House, during which they asked him to do justice to them as political parties made difficult the practice of their political rights as candidates.
Well-informed sources told the motamar.net President Saleh said to the protestors, "We are ready to support all women, who have been selected by their political parties, as independent candidates in our electoral campaign so that they would win in the local councils elections."
"We do support women's rights in decision-making positions so that they get their full rights," Saleh added.
For her part, Ramziah al-Eryani said it was a great meeting, where political parties representatives expressed their views.
Protestors asked President Saleh to be a father to all so that he can do justice to them as their political parties frustrated them in the local councils elections.
Representative of the Yemeni Socialist Party (YSP) said the YSP is the most enthusiastic to support women, but since it joined the Joint Meeting Parties (JMP), it has been subjected to a lot of pressures by the Islah Party and so nominated only 3-4 women.
Additionally, protestors demanded President Saleh find a legal solution to help them participate in the elections a way from political parties, indicating the participation of Yemeni woman is not a newborn experience but started hundreds of years ago as is indicated by the Holy Quran.
In their letter to President Saleh, they said, "We come to you, our father and leader, to do justice to us and adjust other political parties' scales, and help make media address and support women issues."
Tens of women assembled at al-Sabeen Square in Sana'a city in protest against the stances of their political parties towards women candidates in the local elections. They then headed for the Presidential House, where they presented their demands to President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who always supports their various issues and rights.
