Almotamar Net - Assistant Secretary General of the General People’s Congress GPC, the Head of the GPC parliamentary bloc Sultan al-Barakani wondered about latest statements in the media made by chairman of the Higher Council of the Joint Meeting Parties JMP Sultan al-Attwani, Aydarous al-Naqib, chairman of the Yemen Socialist Party YSP parliamentary bloc and deputy chairman of the Islah Party parliamentary bloc Zaid al-Shami. He considered those irritable statements enhance conviction of the GPC, the entire people of Yemen and Yemen international partners that by those statements the JMP confirms its futile attempt to impede holding the upcoming elections in the scheduled time of 27 next April. It also backs down from all its agreements and commitments.

Al-Barakani said that JMP, in previous months, demanded final voting on the election law amendments but at present they announce their refusal of voting on the amendments. In statements to almotamar.net al-Barakani said the worse is that the head of the YSP bloc categorically denies the existence of any amendments on the elections law and that the amendments were not proposed by the government or any member of the parliament. He says the elections cannot be held but with a national accord among all the concerned parties in this right.

Al-Barakani added that the deputy head of the Islah bloc supported that by claiming that voting on those amendments would lead to complication of problems and increase in the tension of the political process. He said it is strange such things to be unmentioned by them at a time they claimed that the amendments are the major inlet for solving the problems and crises and that the JMP achieved victory by those amendments. He added that,” Those statements confirm what we have previously said that the JMP is living internal crises and premonitions it cannot get rid of them. The JMP works hard to lead the country to a state of constitutional vacuum, thinking that what it was unable to gain via ballot boxes it would gain if there is a constitutional vacuum by dreaming of forming a government of national unity and thinking that is the shortest of paths to attain power better than opposition and ballot boxes.”

Al-Barakani said what arouses ridicule is that the three JMP’s officials alleged that by announcing its intention on the final voting on the draft amendments, the GPC parliamentary bloc tried to mislead. They alleged that the GPC tried to delude the people that the announcement came under agreement with the JMP. He said as if the JMP wants to say that non-agreement with them would not lead to the elections and the elections are hostage with those “miserable” in the JMP. Al-Barakani denied claims of the JMP in that the GPC wanted by its announcement to final voting on the election law amendments intended to appease outside parties, saying the GPC respects its commitments and just signing with the JMP on considering and benefiting from recommendations of the European Union team has been an irrevocable commitment.

He said the GPC is convinced that the JMP would not respect or commit to any agreement but it was the insistence of President Ali Abdullah Saleh on continuation of dialogue with the JMP. He said that conviction resulted from the JMP non-commitment to the agreement of principles signed with them.

Al-Barakani also expressed that the international partners in the National Democratic Institute, the European Union and IFES would reach the similar conviction on the JMP’s non-commitment especially after launching these statements refusing voting on the draft amendments of the elections law and their seeking for hindering the elections.
