Almotamar.net - Kuala Lumpur International Conference on fighting sea piracy and seas crimes praised Yemen’s strategy in fighting sea piracy and the efforts being exerted by Yemeni navy force for securing navigation routes in the Gulf of Aden and offshore Somali coasts.

Delegations of the European Union, especially the British delegation, and the America have expressed admiration of the Yemeni strategy in fighting sea piracy and capability of Yemeni navy force of securing navigation routes in the Gulf of Aden and offshore Somali coasts.

The conference, held on 18-19 may 2009 attended by more than 50 states and non-governmental organisations as well as experts from insurance and navigation, companies recommended support for the Somali government I fixing law and order in addition to supporting Yemen for completing capabilities of its navy force. It also recommended the necessity of finding practical and effective solutions for the problems of piracy and crimes in seas in the coast of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden and finding the legal structure for deterrence of piracy.

Recommendations of the conference also stressed recognition of efforts of governments of countries overlooking the international routes and heir efforts in combating sea piracy and respect of sovereignty and independence of territories of those countries taking into consideration their being the first responsible for protection of their territories in addition to recognizing the international communication group against piracy in Somalia coast an the Gulf of Aden.

Director of Yemen Coast Guard for Aden Gulf sector Col. Lutf Abdullah al-Baarti presented to the conference a working paper on Yemen strategy for fighting sea piracy in Aden Gulf and offshore Somalia coasts, reviewing Yemen’s efforts for combating the sea piracy by showing a documentary multimedia clarifying sea maps of Aden Gulf and the Red Sea and stages for fighting sea terror in Yemen.

He added that Yemeni Coast Guard and Navy force respond to distress calls immediately after receiving statement from the seized ship and from the nearest observation centre of the incident area. He called for joining international community efforts in fighting then phenomenon of sea piracy and explained Yemen’s needs for long-range sea boats so that Yemeni navy force will be able to respond to distress call even in the high seas or at distant distances.
