BRUSSELS, Belgium (The Associated Press) - The European Union said Monday it will seek to coordinate and boost efforts throughout the 25-nation bloc to improve anti-terror detection technologies that could spot potential terrorists and screen luggage for explosives.

"Recent events in the U.K. have further underlined that detection devices must be continuously improved in order to reflect the ever-changing threat posed by terrorists and criminals and to ensure that people are able to travel safely, said EU Justice Commissioner Franco Frattini.

"Modern detection technologies have therefore an important role to play," he said. The EU will consult with law enforcement, customs and security authorities on how to improve detection without infringing privacy rights.

The European Commission will also organize a conference on better ways to detect explosives next month.

On Monday, the Commission published a consultative green paper on how to streamline anti-terror detection methods and hopes to garner reaction from all the stakeholders involved by the end of the year.
