almotamar.net - The 8+8 sub-committee discussed a five-region republic as a possible solution to the Southern Issue Thursday evening with UN Special Envoy to Yemen Jamal Benomar and NDC Secretary General Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak.
Benomar briefed the committee on the outcomes of his last visit to New York, where he reported to the UN Security Council on the latest developments in Yemen and its political transition. Benomar focused on the country�s National Dialogue Conference and progress on the Southern Issue in particular.
Benomar reviewed his report with the committee, praising Yemen for its determination to overcome challenges.
He confirmed that there is international praise for Yemen, saying that Yemenis should be proud of their unique model amongst Arab Spring countries.
Benomar praised the committee�s achievements, and expressed his hope for a solution based on consensus for controversial issues, saying that the country must be ready for compromise and concessions.
Committee members expressed their concerns with the multi-region model. They told Benomar they were keen to continue discussions on the state�s structure.
Committee members are expected to continue discussion on proposals for the Southern Issue on Friday.
