SANA'A- - Yemen launched on Saturday a campaign for traffic safety as part of an International Initiative for Realizing Safety in Roadways. The campaign is being organized by the Arab Organization for Traffic Safety in cooperation with the Yemen Club for Tourism and Car and the Ministry of Interior and will run from 16 December to 20 December under the slogan �Think before driving�.

�Deputy Premier, Rashad al-Alimi said that Yemen is suffering from increase of traffic accidents due to a lack of awareness among drivers as well as bad roadways. He expressed the government�s concern that traffic accidents negatively impact the country, economically and socially. He called on everyone to participate in the effort to raise awareness on traffic safety, wishing such activities could reach other governorates and enjoy enough media coverage.

Chairman of the Yemeni Club for Tourism and Car, Alawi al-Shibani said that this campaign is organized as part of an international initiative aiming at achieving real traffic safety in developing countries. He attributed the increase of traffic accidents in the country to speeding and the indifference of drivers towards road signs He said that participation of the private sector in this event came as a bid to develop the partnership between private sector and public sector in comprehensive development activities.. Abdullah Shobial, director of traffic department in Sana�a, said that the campaign is a good initiative to support efforts of his department to spread awareness among people on the importance of complying with traffic regulations .
