The 21 victims were members of an ancient sect, Yazidis, that is neither Christian nor Muslim and whose Kurdish followers have faced persecution under a succession of rulers. Witnesses, quoted by DPA news agency, said the incident was extremely violent and it raises another problem: the attacks between Muslims and non-Muslims could become worse and affect the already fragile situation existing between Arabs and Kurds.

Two car bombs attacks killed more than 19 people in Baghdad, also on Sunday. One of them was supposed to hit a police station being used as temporary quarters for officers whose station had been destroyed in a bomb blast.
