Almotamar.net - Resident director of the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) in Yemen Peter Dimitrov said election of governors by members of local councils strengthens role of the councils in running of the local affair and increases their importance instead of exceeding them via the direct election by the citizens.

In a meeting Sunday with the Minister of Local Administration Abdylqader Hillal, Dimitrov praised the level of preparations for holding elections of the capital mayor and governors and mentioned they are compatible with international criteria.

He added that the process of boycotting the elections gives the wrong impression on the boycotting and reflects their not reaching at the political maturity. He said it also gives a wrong message to supporters of the boycotter and confirms the boycotter�s weakness and inability to enter the democratic contest with others.

The international expert showed preparedness of the NDI to offer all technical help and support to the Ministry to fulfill the process of electing governors of provinces which he considered as advanced step and important on the road pf enhancing democracy and the transfer to the local rule with large authorities .

The Minister of Local administration has discussed with Dimitrov sides of cooperation with the Institute regarding training of the overseeing committees in election of governors and the committees of ballot boxes.

The two sides also discussed subjects related to mechanism of observation of the elections of the mayor of the capital and the governors by the international organisations that wish to participate in observation in these elections.
