Almotamar.net - Women who have participated in a symposium held in Sana'a Wednesday have stressed the necessity of putting up mechanisms for rendering the President of the Republic's initiative launched last September to legislations forcing Yemeni political parties to allocate 15% for the women on the list of their candidates for the parliamentary and local councils.
Deputy Chairwoman of the Women National Committee Houriya Mashour has expressed her resentment for the Islah party stand that let down the woman in the local elections of 2006 and its negative role in influencing other parties inside the opposition Joint Meeting Parties (JMP). She pointed out that the Islah is still hostage of cultural and ideological problems.
She said women have come under pressures from their parties to prevent them from candidacy for the local councils, affirming that without the quota system the woman will gain nothing and held the General People's Congress (GPC) as partly responsible.
In her working paper to the symposium, organized by Al-Risalah Centre for Research and Democratic Development in cooperation with the general secretariat of the Supreme Commission for Elections, Dr Ibtihaj al-Kamal pointed out the GPC's adoption of internal quota in which accordingly the woman has obtained 15% of seats at various leading and base positions of the party.
She considered that the best of mechanisms for the translation of he presidential initiative concerning the woman quota and related to making amendments on the law of parties forcing them to allocate seats for the women. She said the initiative represents a political will in pushing forward for the woman participation in the public life.
