Almotamar.net - The United Nations High Commission for Refugees UNHCR said on Thursday that 35 African migrants, majority of them are believed to be Somalis and Ethiopians has drowned when a boat owned by a smuggler capsized offshore Yemen coast.

UNHCR added that more than 80 survivals, among them a Somali 8 years old child, whose mother drowned in the incident in a latest tragedy in Aden Gulf. The incident happened last Wednesday and the survivals managed to reach the shore while another boat carrying 105 migrants was able to complete the journey safely.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees said in a statement that 35 persons were drowned after one of the boats, both of which carrying 220 passengers across Aden Gulf coming from Somalia, capsized on Wednesday offshore Abyan governorate , indicating that the two boats left the area of Busas , Somalia last Monday.
Reuters agency quoted the spokesperson for the UNHCR as saying that this is one of the more tragic incidents in months.

UNHCR says he migrants coming who attempt this kind of dangerous crossing do that in escape from the desperate circumstances because of the civil war and political instability in addition to poverty and starvation in Somalia and the Horn of Africa region.

According to the UNHCR at least 131 persons drowned in this year and 66 others are deemed missing in the sea. 387 boats carrying about 20 thousand persons arrived in Yemen since the beginning of this year after crossing the dangerous waters. The Yemeni government says more than 700 thousand Somali refugees are present in Yemen and those numbers increasing every day cause security, economic and health challenges to Yemen.
